This castle is unusual
for the region both for its style and setting and for its history. The castle
was built at the beginning of the XVII th century by the Marshal of Effiat, the
third most important person in the Kingdom after the King and the Cardinal, the
father of Cinq-Mars.
The visitor will discover furniture dating from the
time of Louis XIII, Louis XIV and Louis XV a drawing-room with parquet-flooring
in the style of Versailles, painted wainscoting (Italian Renaissance), a central
pier showing the Vulcan forge , frescoes, stained glass windows from the romantic
era (the life of Cinq-Mars), the Marshal's seal, a flag and souvenirs of the Royal
Military School and parchments signed by Louis XIII and Gaston d'Orléans.
There is also an english-style parterre by A. Mollet, Le Nôtre's sponsor,
a terrace with statues of nymps, ornamental lakes
and a very beautiful doorway.
The park has been restored to its original XVIIth century design, as it was during
the Marshal d'Ettiat's time. So too has the "Nymphee" which stands 3
metres high at the centre of the 130 meter long terrace with its illuminated rockery
(urn, fountain and decorative vault).
